Our founder Kurt Hahn considered “the foremost task of education” to be the development in young people of “an enterprising curiosity, an undefeatable spirit, tenacity in pursuit, readiness for sensible selfdenial, and above all, compassion.”
Give Back To Give More
Competing in the Gordonstoun School Highland Games was one of the most exciting experiences I’ve ever had! The whole day was full of energy, fun, and team spirit, and I loved being part of such a special event. Being chosen as this year’s flag bearer was a huge honour and made me feel incredibly proud. Carrying the flag in front of everyone was a moment I’ll never forget. It was amazing to see so many people cheering and supporting each other, and the atmosphere was fantastic from start to finish. Taking part in the Highland Games and representing the school in this way has been a truly unforgettable experience.
I really enjoyed taking part in the litter pick at school. It was fun using a litter picker because it felt like a game to see who could collect the most rubbish. My friend and I worked together as a team, and we had lots of laughs while helping to keep our school grounds clean.I liked wearing the high-visibility vest because it made me feel important and like I was helping my school. It was great to see how much litter we collected by the end of the event. It made me feel proud that we were making our school look nicer for everyone.
I would definitely like to do another litter pick because it was fun, helped the environment, and gave me the chance to spend time with my friends.
“I really enjoy the entrance into the arena, seeing everybody stop what they are doing and watch as we march in and around the field. I particularly like to see people laughing and smiling. The pipe band is a really supportive group and always make me feel welcome.
I enjoy the games, because I get to spend time with my friends whilst supporting the year 6s as they compete. The atmosphere of the games is always so welcoming and fun, I love looking around the many different stalls.
The service opportunities I was able to support were the pipe band, helping with the raffle, assisting with the bookstore and marshalling the cross country.”

“At last year’s Gordonstoun Highland Games, I didn’t take part in the events, but I was still challenged differently through helping out. Helping to do the raffle and standing where we directed people through the cross-country track required organisation and staying focused for long periods. Supporting the runners and helping the event run smoothly showed me that service is just as important as competing. It made me realise that challenge doesn’t always mean taking part—it can also mean stepping up to help others.”
